Microsoft Thinks The Wii U Is Identical To The Xbox 360

It seems as though the similarity between the Xbox 360 controller and the new Wii U Pro controller isn?t the only thing Microsoft sees as common between the two consoles. Microsoft?s Phil Spencer has now stated that the Wii U is more identical to the Xbox 360 than most people think and that the similar controllers could in fact be a strategic move by Nintendo.

?I think their Pro Controller makes a lot of sense with the platform they?ve built. They are building a platform that is effectively a 360 when you think of graphical capability.?

Spencer also reckons that the Pro Controller resembling the Xbox 360 controller could have ben a strategic move on their part, with this design allowing for easy ports of Xbox 360 titles in the console?s future.

?Now they are really making an on-ramp for the back catalog of games that are on 360. It is easy for those games to move over to the Wii U. They?ve moved the buttons around, and they?ve made a controller that feels familiar for 360 gamers, so I get why they are putting those pieces together.?

This all sounds good on paper, but plans like this (if this is in fact Nintendo?s plan) aren?t going to attract more people to the Wii U. As I stated in my hands-on with the console, the most attractive things about it are it?s unique features, not the ones it is now borrowing from previous console generations.
