National News: Chinese bus driver dies of bird flu

A Chinese bus driver who tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu virus has died in a city bordering Hong Kong, health officials said.

It was the country's first reported case of the disease in humans in 18 months.

The man surnamed Chen died in the wealthy southern city of Shenzhen, provincial health officials said. Shenzhen is separated by a small river from Hong Kong, where thousands of birds have been slaughtered after two were confirmed to have the virus last week.

During the month prior to his fever, the 39-year-old had apparently had no direct contact with poultry and did not travel out of Shenzhen, a metropolis of 10 million people.

H5N1 rarely infects humans and usually only those who come into close contact with diseased poultry. But among those infected, nearly 60% die, and scientists are closely watching the virus for any signs it is becoming more easily transmissible from human to human.

Chen developed a fever on December 21 and was admitted to hospital on December 25, city and provincial authorities said in a statement. Health Ministry experts confirmed today that he was infected with H5N1, the provincial health department said.

The Guangdong health department also said 120 people who had close contact with Chen have not developed any abnormal symptoms.

The Ministry of Health has informed the World Health Organisation about the case, local authorities said.

WHO says globally there have been 336 human deaths from 573 confirmed bird flu cases since 2003. Of these, 40 cases were in China, 26 of which were fatal.

Chen's death comes a week after two dead birds tested positive for the virus in Hong Kong.

iPhone 4S Supposedly Launching in China in Mid-January

One might imagine that by now the iPhone 4S is available all over the world, but apparently it will be coming to China mid-January. The handset will debut in China before the Chinese New Year, that takes place on January 23rd. A couple of retail stores in Shenzhen and Shenyang are already taking preorders for the handset, although Apple didn?t specify an exact debut date.

The rumor about the mid-January launch first appeared courtesy of the People?s Daily in China, saying that the local Ministry of Industry and Information Technology gave the latest iPhone its necessary certification to start selling. This approval was rumored to have been received on December 21st and just for the sake of a timeline, the iPhone 4S launched in the USA in October and entered an extra 20 countries earlier this month.

We?ve yet to find out some decent sales figures, but I?m sure they?re in the millions by now and that they probably surpassed the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S II, for example (for the same time frame I mean). And now we?re on route to the iPad 3 launch with rumors pouring in from everywhere about it? Wonder when this device will come to China.

Wintertime is great for observing Florida 'snowbirds'

We have two sorts of "snowbirds" on Florida beaches - human and avian.

Many come long distances to enjoy the mild oceanic weather of the low latitudes during winter. Some of the birds breed in northern Canada so the contrast between their summer and winter habitats is considerable.

It is fascinating to compare the different modes of feeding employed by various shorebirds. It can also be difficult for the uninitiated to distinguish among the species, some of which are confusingly similar. I recommend learning a few of the more common types of gulls, terns, egrets/herons, plovers and sandpipers to enhance your knowledge of beach ecology.

One of the most treasured birds is the common loon, which is not strictly speaking a beach bird, but it will feed just adjacent to the beach. This loon was swimming a few feet off the beach at Don Pedro Island, allowing it to trap small fish up against the sand.

Loons breed in northern freshwater lakes and have a marvelous call that has been used in movie sound tracks (notably "On Golden Pond") for years as a call of the wild. It is a special treat to see them in their winter saltwater habitat although their non-breeding plumage is drab compared with their summer finery. You will notice most of the birds are quite inconspicuous in winter to better blend in with the surroundings.

On the beach, especially in muddy areas, you will often see the dunlin, a mid-sized sandpiper with a long down-turned bill. It goes around probing the sediment for small invertebrates.

In comparison the red knot is slightly larger and has a shorter straight bill, which is used to pick food off the surface.

These two birds breed in the Arctic and illustrate how body size and bill length define the life styles of shorebirds. Red knots are famous for staging with millions of other shorebirds in Delaware Bay to fatten up on the eggs of horseshoe crabs before they fly north.

The plovers are a an interesting group of small- to medium-sized birds with short bills and a distinctive upright profile that picks up food from the surface. The largest is the black-bellied plover (only black in summer), which breeds in the Arctic north of Hudson Bay.

Two smaller plovers, the snowy and Wilson's, breed in Florida, including right here on Gasparilla Island.

Some of our wintering snowy plovers have been banded and found to breed on beaches in the Florida Panhandle. Many Wilson's plovers breed in our area. It is intriguing that the Wilson's has a larger bill than the snowy, apparently the better to catch and eat small ghost crabs.

One should not neglect to look overhead to observe birds such as gulls, terns and some exciting tropical visitors such as the magnificent frigate bird soaring overhead. Frigate birds are the ultimate flying machine with the longest wings relative to body mass of any bird.

They are parasites on other fish-eating birds and virtually never land on the surface. They breed in the Caribbean and the males have a bizarre red pouch under the throat, which is inflated and used to attract females.

To illustrate the amazing design of the frigate bird, I took a photo in the Yucatan of a rarely seen perched adult female. This illustrates the huge wings and giant hooked beak, which is used to pick up food from the surface without landing, or to attack other birds to steal their food.

The next time you go to the beach, look around to see what birds are there and you will begin to learn the major categories and species. It will enrich your experience to know a bit more about beach ecology and allow you to compare beaches at different times and observe changes. There is so much more to beaches than just sun, sand and waves.

Hedgie Steve Cohen Making 2nd Baseball Bid, Going After Dodgers?

Hedge fund manager Steve Cohen, who earlier this year made a play for a stake in the New York Mets, is reportedly in the bidding for one of major league baseball?s most storied ? and troubled ? franchises, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Cohen, 55, who runs the $14 billion SAC Capital Advisors LLC, is believed to be working with at least two others in the effort.

The Dodgers, who have won six World Series championships, filed for bankruptcy on June 27. Last month, Frank McCourt, the team?s owner, agreed to sell. Bids are due on Jan. 13 and could command up to $1 billion.

Guggenheim Partners Chief Executive Officer Mark Walter said this month that he was joining with pro basketball Hall of Fame member Magic Johnson to bid for the team.

ST. PAUL, Minn. New research links 'silent strokes,' or small spots of dead brain cells, found in about one out of four older adults to memory loss in the elderly. The study is published in the January 3, 2012, print issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

"The new aspect of this study of memory loss in the elderly is that it examines silent strokes and hippocampal shrinkage simultaneously," said study author Adam M. Brickman, PhD, of the Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer's Disease and the Aging Brain at Columbia University Medical Center in New York.

For the study, a group of 658 people ages 65 and older and free of dementia were given MRI brain scans. Participants also underwent tests that measured their memory, language, speed at processing information and visual perception. A total of 174 of the participants had silent strokes.

The study found people with silent strokes scored somewhat worse on memory tests than those without silent strokes. This was true whether or not people had a small hippocampus, which is the memory center of the brain.

"Given that conditions like Alzheimer's disease are defined mainly by memory problems, our results may lead to further insight into what causes symptoms and the development of new interventions for prevention. Since silent strokes and the volume of the hippocampus appeared to be associated with memory loss separately in our study, our results also support stroke prevention as a means for staving off memory problems," said Brickman.

Arab monitors tour Homs, Syrian tanks seen leaving (Reuters)

BEIRUT (Reuters) ? At least 20,000 people protested in Homs on Tuesday against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as Arab League peace monitors began to tour the flashpoint city and the army withdrew some tanks following battles that killed 34 people.

The observers want to determine if Assad is keeping his promise to implement a peace plan to end his uncompromising crackdown on nine months of revolt that has generated an armed uprising, edging the country towards civil war.

Activist reports just before the monitors arrived said up to a dozen tanks were seen leaving Baba Amr, one of Homs's most embattled neighborhoods, but others were being hidden.

"My house is on the eastern entrance of Baba Amr. I saw at least six tanks leave the neighborhood at around 8 in the morning (0600 GMT)," Mohamed Saleh told Reuters by telephone. "I do not know if more remain in the area."

The opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, relaying activist reports from its base in Britain, said protesters had gathered in Khalidiya, one of four districts where there has been bloodshed as rebels fight security forces using tanks.

Activists say they want to impress on the Arab League mission that it must not let its teams be hoodwinked by the state and be shown places where life is relatively normal.

As the monitors arrived, tanks were seen leaving the Baba Amr district which activists say was pounded for the past four days. Hundreds have been killed in Homs in the revolt. The United Nations says at least 5,000 have been killed in Syria since protests began in March.

Assad is internationally isolated. Western powers and his neighbors Turkey and Jordan have called on him to step down, ending a 41-year-old family power dynasty. He says he is fighting Islamist terrorism steered from abroad.

On the border with Turkey, Syrian forces killed several men from an "armed terrorist group" trying to cross into Syria, the state news agency SANA said on Tuesday.

The northern border has become the route of choice for infiltration by army defectors fighting to topple Assad.

"Special forces were able to kill and wound several gunmen and seized some weapons, ammunition, army uniforms, communication tools and fake identity cards," SANA said. It did not give a specific casualty count.

SANA also reported that said "an armed terrorist group targeted and sabotaged a gas pipeline near Rastan in Homs province" on Tuesday.

The pipeline has been attacked several times in recent months and has come back into operation after outages each time.

MEETING WITH HOMS GOVERNOR

The monitors started by meeting the governor of Homs, Syria's Dunia television channel said. An Arab League source said they intended to tell him where they wanted to go, based on requests from people in Homs who have witnessed the violence.

Dunia showed no footage of the monitors. Syria has barred most foreign journalists from the country, making it hard to verify reports of events on the ground.

At least 34 people were killed in Homs on Monday as tanks fired at targets among apartment blocks.

Amateur video recorded by activists on Monday and posted on the Internet showed tanks prowling around Baba Amr, firing at unseen targets. Video showed gruesome pictures of mangled bodies in the wreckage of building that bore the signs of shelling.

Assad's opponents fear that the monitors - who arrived in the country on Monday after weeks of negotiations with Arab states - will be used as a cloak of respectability for a government that will hide the extent of violence.

They say tanks have been withdrawn before from restive cities such as Deraa and Hama, only to return later.

Syria stalled the Arab League for months before accepting the monitoring mission, the first significant international intervention on the ground since the start of the popular revolt inspired by Arab pro-democracy uprisings this year.

The Arab mission, led by Sudanese General Mustafa Dabi, is starting with 50 monitors who arrived in Damascus on Monday and will be split into five teams of ten. About 100 more monitors are to follow soon.

The teams will use government transport, according to Dabi. But that arrangement likely to fuel charges by the anti-Assad opposition that the monitoring mission will be impeded and hoodwinked from the outset.

Arab League delegates insist the mission will nevertheless maintain the "element of surprise" and be able to go wherever it chooses with no notice.

AVERTING CIVIL WAR

In Baba Amr, activist video showed bodies shattered like rag dolls and buildings smashed as if by heavy weapons. The video images were impossible to verify but hard to fake.

Armed insurgency is eclipsing civilian protest in Syria. Many fear a slide to sectarian war between the Sunni Muslim majority, the driving force of the protest movement, and minorities that have mostly stayed loyal to the government, particularly the Alawite sect to which Assad belongs.

Analysts say the Arab League is anxious to avoid civil war. Western powers have shown no desire to intervene militarily in a volatile neighborhood of Middle East conflict, and the United Nations Security Council is split.

Assad's opponents appear divided on aims and tactics. He retains strong support in important areas -- including Damascus and the second city Aleppo -- of the country, and maintains an anti-Israel alliance with Iran.

Fighting in Homs has intensified since a double suicide bombing in Damascus on Friday that killed 44 people.

At least ten army defectors were killed in fighting with security forces in the suburb of Douma outside Damascus, according to the British-based Observatory.

"The violence is definitely two-sided," said a Homs resident who gave his name only as Mohammed to protect his safety. "I've been seeing ambulances filled with wounded soldiers passing by my window in the past days. They're getting shot somehow."

Parts of Homs are defended by the Free Syrian Army, made up of defectors from the regular armed forces, who say they have tried to protect civilians.

Egypt's military rulers study plan to speed up vote (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Egypt's military rulers are studying a proposal from their own advisers to bring forward parliamentary elections by two weeks after demands from protesters and politicians to speed up transition to civilian rule, an advisory council member said Sunday.

Many Egyptians believe the army is no longer fit to manage security on the ground and carry out difficult reforms at a time of political and economic crisis.

Friday, thousands rallied in Cairo and other cities to demand the army give up power and to vent anger after 17 people were killed in recent protests where troops beat and clubbed women and men even as they lay on the ground.

Voting for the upper house, or Shura Assembly, is due to be held in three rounds beginning on January 29 and ending on March 5. It follows a similarly protracted vote for the lower house that began in November and is due to end in mid-January.

"The military council has agreed to study the option of shortening the election time for the Shura by two weeks, to end on February 22," Sherif Zahran, a member of a council advising the military on the transition to civilian rule told Reuters.

Zahran said the judiciary had agreed to the idea of squeezing Shura elections into two stages instead of three and that a plan to shorten the vote tallying process was being studied also.

"This would allow for both the (lower house of) parliament and Shura to convene in a joint meeting by the end of February," Zahran told Reuters.

Once parliament convenes, Egypt will draw up a constitution and a presidential vote is planned before the end of June.

Protests continue daily in Tahrir Square. Several hundred protesters have set up camp there. Some are demanding the army bring forward the presidential vote to as early as January 25, the first anniversary of the uprising that ousted Hosni Mubarak.

Others, worrying that 10 months after Mubarak's downfall Egypt remains in disarray, protested Friday to end protests so order can be restored and the economy revitalized.

A source close to the army said the military council, including leader Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, was meeting to decide on what was needed to speed up the Shura vote.

"Other changes will have to take place if this plan passes, such as how long the constitutional committee will take to draft the constitution," the source said, adding that Tantawi would first have to ratify any new voting timetable.

No one at the military council was available to comment.

Analysts say a speedy transfer could play into the hands of military by boosting the chances of presidential candidates with close ties to the army, including Amr Moussa.

Moussa, a former foreign minister and ex-head of the Arab League, said an earlier presidential was also being studied.

"Field Marshal Tantawi said presidential elections will be held no later than June 30. This means there is room for presidential elections to come sooner," Moussa, who is also a member of the advisory council, told Reuters Sunday.

Ethicist: 18th century 'giant' should be buried

In this undated image provided by the Royal College of Surgeons, the skeleton, left, of Charles Byrne, nicknamed "The Irish Giant," who stood about 7 feet, 7 inches (2.3 meters) tall, and died in 1783 aged 22, is displayed in London's Hunterian Museum. Two experts are calling for the skeleton of the famous 18th-century giant to be removed from the museum and buried at sea in keeping with his last wishes. Writing in the British Medical Journal, medical ethicist Len Doyal and lawyer Thomas Muinzer say there is no good scientific reason to display the skeleton and a strong moral case against it. Museum director Sam Alberti said Thursday Dec. 22, 2011 that the skeleton is still valuable to scientists, who have used Byrne's DNA to help develop treatments for the condition from which he suffered. (AP Photo/Royal College of Surgeons)

LONDON (AP) ? The skeleton of an 18th-century celebrity nicknamed the 'Irish Giant' should be removed from a museum and buried at sea in keeping with his last wishes, two experts have argued, reviving a debate about the ethics of handling human remains.

Writing in the British Medical Journal, medical ethicist Len Doyal and legal researcher Thomas Muinzer said there is no good scientific reason to display the skeleton of Charles Byrne, who died in 1783, and a strong moral case against it.

"What has been done cannot be undone but it can be morally rectified," the two men wrote. "Surely it is time to respect the memory and reputation of Byrne."

Byrne stood about 7 feet, 7 inches (2.3 meters) tall as a result of acromegaly, a condition caused when a tumor on the pituitary gland stimulates an excess of growth hormone.

He became a celebrity in 18th-century London as the star turn in a museum of curiosities but died aged just 22.

Despite Byrne's wish to be buried at sea, his body was purchased by pioneering surgeon and anatomist John Hunter, who often hired grave robbers to supply him with corpses. For two centuries Byrne's skeleton has been on display at the Royal College of Surgeons' Hunterian Museum in London.

Doyal, of London's Queen Mary University, and Muinzer, of Queen's University Belfast, said that while Byrne's skeleton had been of use to medical research, that was no reason to put it on public display.

"Moreover, now that Byrne's DNA has been extracted, it can be used in further research," they wrote.

The museum's director, Sam Alberti, conceded Thursday there was a "powerful moral argument" for respecting Byrne's wishes. But he said that was outweighed by the skeleton's continuing benefit to medical research.

"Patients with the condition today live long and much happier lives," Alberti said ? in part due to knowledge gleaned from Byrne's DNA.

Byrne's skeleton has helped scientists identify several dozen people in Ireland with the same genetic mutation ? all believed to be related to Byrne through a common ancestor.

One of them, Brendan Holland, says the skeleton should remain ? and he thinks Byrne would agree.

"What would his view be if he knew what we know now?" Holland said in a video for the British Medical Journal website. "He would almost certainly agree with my view that this is the right thing to do today."

Americans Are Disillusioned with Candidate Obama; What About President Obama? (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | President Barack Obama has lost support from his progressive liberal base.

According to the Dec. 11, Gallup poll Obama's approval rating was at 43 percent. Obama's all-time-low approval rating is somewhere around 38 percent. President Obama's approval rating usually averages around 50 percent. Obama's approval rating has been as high as 69 percent. Recently there has been uproar in the Obama's progressive base with members expressing disillusionment with the president. George Clooney was quoted in an interview with ABC as being "disillusioned with people who are disillusioned with Obama."

Americans' disillusionment with Obama is baffling to the average political scientist who can point to numerous accomplishments by President Obama. There are more than nine pages of signed legislation on the White House website. The disillusionment with President Obama seems to come from the fact that he cannot be all things to all people. President Obama cannot control corporate hiring practices. Obama's administration spent billions of stimulus dollars to convince corporations to hire Americans once again. The hope was that increased corporate hiring would stimulate the economy. The 2010 election of a majority of Republicans in the House of Representatives ended President Obama's legislative accomplishments. That was the end of any hope for a comprehensive jobs bill and any more stimulus spending for jobs.

Americans disillusionment with Obama is because the people of America found out that Barack H. Obama was just an ordinary man. He inspired hope where there was no hope. Could Obama really change D.C. when he took office in 2009? The problem that Obama faced was that it was business as usual in D.C. He had promised to clean up D.C. if he was elected. Noam Chomsky attributes the disillusionment with Obama to the fact that he was an unknown. Chomsky says, "People know Obama now and that is his problem."

Obama's campaign staff had better find out why the public is so disillusioned with the president if he wants to win the 2012 election.

The president needs to address his entire base instead of pandering to the centrists. Progressives feel that Obama has caved in to Republican demands on more than one issue. Obama has not created jobs for African-Americans. Obama has not passed an immigration policy as promised to Hispanics during the 2008 campaign. Yet Obama's approval rating still remains high in those two core constituencies. African-Americans' support for President Obama has remained high at 89 percent. According to Politico, 61 percent of Hispanics plan on voting for Obama in the 2012 election.

President Obama's accomplishments include repealing "don't ask, don't tell" and passing the Hire Veterans Act. The accomplishment that Obama will go down in history for is the Affordable Healthcare Act. Americans should be asking themselves are they disillusioned with President Obama or Candidate Obama? President Obama has accomplished much more than Candidate Obama ever hoped to do. President Obama will forever be known as the most productive president in U.S. history unless he losses the 2012 election.

Superficial snack: wintery wedding makeup tutorial

I've been watching the vids from the totally charismatic Marlena from Makeup Geek on Youtube for ages, and love this particular tutorial for an icy, winter makeup look. It would be rad for a winter wedding (or holiday party). I especially love the blue glitter liner, which is sparkly without looking like you might also be attending a rave at the after-party. Although that sounds kinda cool now that I think on it.

But I digress! There are lots of other good tutorials to match your wedding color scheme, but this one is my fave.

Here is the full tutorial plus the video is below.

    ?

Is anyone planning a winter look for this holiday season? Who's planning a winter wedding? Let us know in the comments if you try this out!

    Syracuse coach investigation faces challenges

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? Prosecutors investigating allegations of child molestation against former Syracuse assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine face obstacles that include finding corroborating proof, statutes of limitations on old accusations, and the credibility of the men who accuse him of sex abuse.

The 65-year-old Fine, who had been coach Jim Boeheim's top assistant since 1976, has adamantly denied wrongdoing. He was fired when three men made public accusations and ESPN played a 2002 recording of a phone call in which a woman ESPN identified as Laurie Fine, the coach's wife, tells accuser Bobby Davis she knew "everything that went on."

But state charges against Fine are out, for the time being. Davis is now 39 and his stepbrother Mike Lang, another former ball boy who also told ESPN that Fine molested him, is 45; both men say they were first abused as boys in the 1980s. Any crimes against them happened so long ago that the statute of limitations has expired. Davis went to police in 2002 but even then, it was already too late to bring any charges in New York.

    That leaves a federal prosecution.

The U.S. Secret Service is running that investigation and it hinges on the claims of a third man, Zach Tomaselli of Lewiston, Maine. He has told authorities that Fine molested him in 2002 in a Pittsburgh hotel room on a team trip from Syracuse. He said Fine touched him "multiple" times in that one incident.

The federal statute of limitations that went into effect in 2002 allows prosecution until the victim reaches age 25; Tomaselli is 23 so there is still a window to bring charges.

Lee Kindlon, a criminal defense attorney who practices in state and federal courts, said even though that federal case could proceed, prosecutors will still have to jump other hurdles including a lack of physical proof for something that allegedly happened nine years ago, and Tomaselli's credibility.

Tomaselli faces his own sex abuse charges in Maine and told The Associated Press on Monday he would plead guilty to abusing a 13-year-old boy. He also accused his father of sexually abusing him but a New York State Police investigation that ended in September did not result in charges. The father, Fred Tomaselli, has said he thinks his son is lying about Fine.

"But these allegations are serious and I think the feds are doing the right thing and looking for proof to back up the accusations," Kindlon said.

Investigators searched Fine's home, office and school locker, looking for pornography that could be used "to sexually arouse or groom young males" to have sex. They took computers, cameras, disks and records, among other things. They're also looking for any records that would detail Fine's contact with boys.

Fine was fired on Nov. 27 after Tomaselli came forward and the tape was released.

Lawyers said the tape would probably be classified as hearsay and couldn't be used at trial. And Laurie Fine also generally couldn't be compelled to testify against her husband about anything he told her, though that marital privilege does not extend to what she personally saw.

Paul DerOhannesian, a defense lawyer and former Albany County prosecutor, said prosecutors still have some tools they can use: They can bring information and witnesses before a grand jury, which can result in perjury charges when witnesses are suspected of lying. That happened in the Penn State case involving a former assistant football coach and administrators, he said.

Syracuse University had its law firm investigate Davis' claims in 2005 and said the probe found no evidence to back up the accusations. The school was under no obligation to involve or inform law enforcement.

With the Fine scandal making headlines, authorities say other accusers may come forward but cases generally require more than an individual's statement. Without direct evidence, they could build a case around circumstantial evidence or indications of a cover-up, among other things, DerOhannesian said.

"Prosecutors will want to corroborate to the extent possible. That's really what an investigation is about, to corroborate an allegation," he said.

And federal prosecutors in northern New York, who claim a 98 percent conviction rate, acknowledge they usually bring cases they can win.
