Cancer, chemo led to veterans? lower risk of Alzheimer?s

Source: USA TODAY

The study of 3.5 million veterans found an inverse relationship between Alzheimer?s and all types of cancer except prostate and melanoma ? both of which are largely detected through screening rather than symptoms. Aggressive screening of veterans might find cancers that would not otherwise have caused problems, said researcher Jane Driver, in explaining why those cancers might not share the same relationship with Alzheimer?s.Military veterans diagnosed with most forms of cancer were less likely to develop Alzheimer?s disease, and those who were treated with chemotherapy received even more protection, according to a study released this morning at the Alzheimer?s Association International Conference in Boston.

Other research also supports this inverse relationship, including an Italian study released late last week, that found that those diagnosed with Alzheimer?s ran a 43% lower risk of developing cancer than those without the disease, and people with cancer had a 35% lower chance of developing Alzheimer?s. That study did not look as closely at individual cancers ? though it did find a weaker link with prostate cancer and melanoma ? or at treatment differences.

Driver said chemotherapy may offer extra protection because it reduces inflammation and may prevent brain cells from trying to divide. In Alzheimer?s, brain cells often try to divide when they shouldn?t, leading to their death, she said.

She said no one should take chemotherapy drugs, which are highly toxic, to reduce their risk of Alzheimer?s, but the link suggests that it may be possible to develop medications to address both diseases. Certain chemotherapy drugs may turn out to be more protective of the brain than others, she added, so it may make sense to prescribe them more often.

Another study released this morning showed that diabetics who take the drug Metformin seem to be better protected against Alzheimer?s than those taking other diabetes medications, including Sulfonylurea. Nearly 26 million Americans have type 2 diabetes, which is largely associated with lifestyle factors. Roughly half of those with diabetes develop Alzheimer?s as they age, so finding a drug that is also protective against Alzheimer?s is immensely important, said researcher Rachel Whitmer, an investigator with the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research.

In her study of nearly 15,000 patients with type 2 diabetes, those who took Sulfonylurea had a 26% increased risk of developing Alzheimer?s compared to those on Metformin. Not all patients can tolerate Metformin, but Whitmer said more research should certainly be done to see if that drug should be the first-line treatment for diabetes.

Other research discussed at the conference this morning suggests that postponing retirement may protect against Alzheimer?s and other forms of dementia, likely because it keeps people intellectually engaged for longer; and that socioeconomic differences like education and income ? not lifestyle factors or health status ? may explain why African-Americans are more likely than whites to develop Alzheimer?s.

India lucky to have Dhoni: VVS

Calcutta: Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been very successful captain for India and his recent conquests ? back-to-back titles in the form of the Champions Trophy and the tri-series in the West Indies ? have only glorified his already high status.

One-time teammate V.V.S. Laxman thus rightly feels that India are lucky to have a captain like Dhoni.

?His records speak for himself... He has that uniqueness to respond to a tough situation with ease. He does not involve himself much emotionally, and that?s his quality. India are lucky to have a captain like Dhoni,? Laxman said on the sidelines of a function in the city, on Sunday.

[The former star, who retired last August, has in fact reiterated what he told The Telegraph in April this year.

?? There?s no doubt that Dhoni?s the right person to lead India. We did lose a couple of series overseas, but that can happen... The way Dhoni has taken responsibility to win matches is laudable? Dhoni?s very balanced and doesn?t get very emotional over the results. That?s an excellent quality to possess. Clearly, he prefers leading from the front.?]

In the tri-series final, Dhoni led India to a stunning one-wicket victory taking 16 runs off the very last over. ?He once again stayed composed? I really appreciate the way he?s instilling confidence among the young players. The credit goes to Dhoni and his team.?

He, however, refused to compare Dhoni with former India captain Sourav Ganguly.

Ravindra Jadeja?s emergence as an all-rounder and Shikhar Dhawan?s success as an opener have been largely responsible for India?s stupendous show. Laxman feels Dhoni should be credited for persisting with Jadeja.

?Dhoni backed him well, especially using Jadeja as a bowler. He is also a great fielder and a handy batsman. Jadeja has emerged as a great asset to the Indian team and Dhoni should be complimented,? he said.

"Sampath Speaking" - the thoughts of an Insurer from Thiruvallikkeni: SMS language ..... symbol for 'the' - Melbourne restaurateur

SMS language ..... symbol for 'the' - Melbourne restaurateur

LUV; TIME; CU; ATM; LOL; KISS?????.the language of modern day youngsters which make English teachers and others red hot.. defying common abbreviations; no grammar; no syntax; no part of speech, omission of words?.. ??? still people communicate and most understand too?.Whether you like it or not? the SMS language of textese [text speak / text lingo] has come to stay.? Short Message Service (SMS) is a text messaging service component of phone, web, or mobile communication systems, using standardized communications protocols that allow the exchange of short text messages between fixed line or mobile phone devices. SMS is the most widely used data application in the world, with 3.5 billion active users, or 78% of all mobile phone subscribers. In smartphones it is relatively easier as you have a bigger key boards ~ the touch phones provide a different type of facility but the standard screen in common mobiles where you have numbers and alphabets [3 or 4 per key] together poses a big challenge ? still you can find people typing out messages faster ? sitting in public transport ? worser still some while driving and walking? also ?. !!!Down under there this restaurateur in Melbourne ? Paul Mathis who is trying to make people type differently.? Australian press report of the initiative of Mathis on the most-used word in the English ? more particularly the definite article, the word "the". "The word 'and' is only the fifth-most used word in English and it has its own symbol ? the ampersand," says Mathis. "Isn't it time we accorded the same respect to 'the'?"
One pressing reason on why there should be a symbol for ?the? is the texting space.? Typing the symbol he has devised with a single keystroke will save time and ? crucially, in the context of Twitter ? two characters. It may seem a strange digression for a man whose cafe-cum-restaurant empire encompasses 10 businesses, but he's serious enough about it that he has invested plenty of time and about $75,000 of his own money in it so far. He has developed the typography ? effectively an upper-case "T" and a lower-case "h" bunched together so they share the upright stem ? and an app that puts it in everyone's hand by allowing users to download an entirely new electronic keyboard complete not just with his symbol ? which he pronounces "th" ? but also a row of keys containing the? most frequently typed words in English. He states that this may not change the world but could be quite useful for people.? Mathis insists he doesn't see his app as a money-making venture. "Though I would like to recover the costs, if possible," he adds. But one of the issues he faces in getting past the Apple gatekeepers is that his app is essentially a modification of the keyboard component of the operating system ? and that is a big no-no in the Apple universe. Twitter too is critical of his invention.? Some critics say that he is attempting to trademark a symbol that has long been in use as part of the Serbian Cyrillic alphabet (pronounced "tshe", the letter represents the "ch" sound found in the word "chew"). Mathis concedes the likeness, but insists he was a long way down the road on his project before he became aware of it. "The Benedictine monks developed the modern version of the ampersand in the Middle Ages, when they were hand-copying religious texts," he says. "I'm not putting myself in the same league, but who knows ? maybe in 500 years' time people will be amazed that there was a time when we didn't use 'th'."According to Wikipedia, the 5 most commonly used words in English are, in descending order: the, be, to, of, & ?and. According to Guinness World records ? the fastest completion of a prescribed 160-character text message is 34.65 seconds achieved by Frode Ness (Norway) in Nov 2010.? The message sent was "The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human."? The fastest text message (SMS) using a touch-screen mobile phone is 20.53 seconds and was achieved by Mark Encarnaci?n (USA), outside the Microsoft Studios in Redmond, Washington, USA in ?2013.Tailpiece :? [words at the start : Love; Tears in my eyes; See you; At the moment; Laughing out loud; Keep it simple, stupid?..]With regards ? S. Sampathkumar

Proposed abortion law hits hurdle in North Carolina

By Marti Maguire

RALEIGH, North Carolina (Reuters) - Proposed new safety standards on abortion clinics in North Carolina hit a snag on Tuesday after Republican lawmakers said they would consult more with state regulators before deciding whether to vote on them.

The bill, which would require abortion clinics to meet the same safety standards as ambulatory surgical centers, passed the Republican-controlled state Senate last week in a 24-hour span of activity that the state's Republican governor criticized as hurried.

If lawmakers do not pass the new standards before their current session ends, which could be as soon as next week, they will have to wait until January to revisit the issue.

Nine states have similar safety standards on the books.

Texas lawmakers are considering the new standards, which also require a doctor to be present when women take the so-called "abortion pill," even as widespread protests take place at the state Capitol in Austin. On Monday, a judge in Wisconsin temporarily blocked a new law that would require abortion doctors to have admitting privileges in nearby hospitals.

In North Carolina, the safety standards were tacked on to an unrelated bill with no public notice or hearing last week, and quickly pushed through the state Senate.

Opponents celebrated the delay but cautioned that the battle is not over.

"It's a small victory," said Democratic State Senator Earline Parmon.

The Senate passage of the safety standards sparked protests and was the focus of a "Moral Monday" demonstration that drew an estimated 2,000 people to the capitol building on Monday night.

North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory criticized the Senate for pushing the abortion legislation through in relative secrecy, and House leaders responded by holding a public hearing on Tuesday.

At the hearing, North Carolina Health and Human Services Secretary Aldona Wos said funding more frequent inspections of abortion clinics might go further in ensuring safety.

Her staff estimated that the measure would raise the cost of building a clinic by about $1 million.

Republican sponsors of the measure said they expect to work on the bill over the next two days, although legislative rules prohibit them from amending the same bill at this stage.

Opponents told lawmakers the changes would take away access to safe and legal abortions for women.

"The majority of North Carolinians want you all to focus on jobs, the economy and increasing access to health care, not stripping away a woman's choices," said Suzanne Buckley, Executive Director at NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina.

But supporters, mostly Republicans, said the higher standards will increase safety.

"We're not here to take away the rights of women," said North Carolina state Senator Warren Daniel, a Republican who helped push the Senate legislation toward passage. "We're taking away the right of an industry to operate health clinics under substandard conditions."

Egyptian opposition leader to be named interim prime minister

NBC's Ayman Mohedin reports on news that Mohamed ElBaradei has been named Egypt's interim prime minister and outlines ElBaradei's background and what challenges the new leader will face in transitioning the nation's government.

By Ian Johnston and Charlene Gubash, NBC News

Egypt?s National Salvation Front announced the appointment of an interim prime minister Saturday to run the country during a transition period in the wake of President Mohammed Morsi?s sudden ouster.

Former United Nations nuclear agency chief Mohamed ElBaradei was scheduled to take his oath of office at 8 p.m. local time on Saturday, a spokesperson for the National Salvation Front told NBC News.

ElBaradei, 72, is poised to join an interim administration headed by Adly Mansour, chairman of the supreme constitutional court, who was sworn in as interim president Thursday.

Meanwhile, supporters of the deposed Morsi again gathered in large numbers Saturday, a day after clashes with security forces and anti-Morsi protesters left 36 dead and more than 1,000 injured.

A Muslim Brotherhood statement said that the movement?s leader Mohamed Badie ? who appeared at a rally on Friday after his arrest was ordered earlier in the week ? was calling for people to ?remain in the public squares of every governorate and every city until power is restored to him [Morsi] as the rightful ruler of Egypt.?

Hitha Prabhakar joins MSNBC's Alex Witt to break down the 3 Big Money Headlines. She mentions that oil analysts are watching the situation in Egypt and they are saying how it will negatively impact gas prices. She discussed the jobs numbers that came out on Friday and explains what hedge fund manager Ron Baron meant when he talked about the Dow reaching 60,000.

?God is great. He can crush every traitor and every treacherous tyrant. The people of Egypt will protect the Revolution, and will continue to demand their rights," Badie said, according to the statement.

On Friday, thousands of Morsi's Islamist supporters marched across a central Cairo bridge in the direction of Tahrir Square, which was also occupied by thousands of protesters whose demonstrations prompted the army to depose Morsi.

The Morsi supporters ended up dispersing after a clash involving a hail of stones, fireworks and sometimes gunfire. There were also clashes in other parts of the country, including Alexandria and the Sinai Peninsula, a hotbed for Islamist militants.

Mohammed Sultan, deputy head of the national ambulance service, told the AP that at least 36 people were killed in Friday's clashes, the highest death toll in one day since the latest outbreak of protests began last Sunday. Another 1,076 were injured.

Amid calls from leaders for both sides to remain peaceful, there are fears the conflict could become increasingly violent.

A new Islamist militant group calling itself Ansar al-Shariah in Egypt announced its formation amid the chaos.

For hours, there was no security in sight as the fighting ensued. Guns, stones and even fireworks were used as weapons but Morsi's supporters were driven back by the anti-Morsi demonstrators, and the military. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

The group said it would gather arms and start training its members, in a statement posted on an online forum for militants in the country's Sinai region on Friday and recorded by the SITE Monitoring organization, Reuters reported.

The group blamed the events on secularists, Egyptian Coptic Christians, state security forces and army commanders, who they said would turn the country into ?a crusader, secular freak.?

It denounced democracy and said it would instead champion Islamic law, or sharia, acquire weapons and train to allow Muslims to "deter the attackers, preserve the religion and empower the sharia of the Lord," SITE reported.

Egypt?s military has been at pains to stress its takeover of power was not a military coup, but an expression of the will of the people as shown by the anti-Morsi protests.

This is key as it would threaten more than $1 billion in annual military aid given by the U.S.

Hassan Ammar / AP

Days of massive protests and a military ultimatum forced the country's first democratically elected president from office.

U.S. law prohibits financial assistance to any country whose elected head of state is deposed in a military coup.

Speaking in Prescott, Arizona, Friday Senator John McCain said the aid should be suspended.

?I say that with great reluctance, but the United States of America I think must learn the lessons of history and that is: We cannot stand by without acting in cases where freely elected governments are unseated by the military arm of those nations,? he said.

McCain also called on the Egyptian military to set a timetable for elections and a new constitution.

?Then we should evaluate whether to continue the aid or not,? he said. ?I am aware that by suspending aid to the Egyptian military, which is the only stable institution in Egypt, we are risking further problems in the Sinai, and in other areas of cooperation with the Egyptian military.?

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
