City council presses for decision on sports-entertaiment contract

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --?Uncertainty over which company will manage the city's sports and entertainment venues has the Jacksonville City Council?pressing Mayor Alvin Brown for an answer.

SMG has?managed city-owned facilities for two decades, but this summer lost out to Global?Spectrum in competitive bidding. The contract SMG currently holds expires on March 31.?

This summer, a city committee that reviews bids recommended?to the mayor that Global Spectrum offered the city the best package.? The ultimate decision is in the hands of mayor.

Councilman John Crescimbeni says a decision is overdue.?

Crescimbeni?introduced legislation that would place nearly?$600,000 from the SMG accounts into a special council operating contingency fund. That?money?reflects?the amount the city has already budgeted, but?would not be?used since SMG has agreed to reduced management fees?when its contract expires in March.

Mayor Brown's spokesman David DeCamp says this is a complex?decision.

"Obviouisly want to resolve this as soon as possible, but we have a partner in this in the Jaguars," said DeCamp.

The NFL team has candidly expressed that it wants SMG to manage EverBank Field. The team?does have the final say on stadium management.
