94% Zero Dark Thirty

All Critics (221) | Top Critics (42) | Fresh (207) | Rotten (14)

Chastain makes Maya as vivid as a bloodshot eye. Her porcelain skin, delicate features and feminine attire belie the steel within.

No doubt Zero Dark Thirty serves a function by airing America's dirty laundry about detainee and torture programs, but in its wake, there's a crying need for a compassionate Coming Home to counter its brutal Deer Hunter.

While "Zero Dark Thirty" may offer political and moral arguing points aplenty, as well as vicarious thrills,as a film it's simply too much of a passable thing.

From the very first scenes of Zero Dark Thirty, director Kathryn Bigelow demonstrates why she is such a formidable filmmaker, as adept with human emotion as with visceral, pulse-quickening action.

A timely and important reminder of the agonizing human price of zealotry.

Not only is Zero Dark Thirty one of the year's best movies, it's an inspiring one to share with your daughters. That is, if they're old enough to deal with explicit torture scenes.

There is no Team America-style, flag-waving bravado behind this story - it is quite the opposite.

Bigelow has created the best film of 2012.

"Zero Dark Thirty" is less a celebration how terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden was found and killed than an engrossing examination of why it took a decade to deal with him.

Following on from the great acclaim of The Hurt Locker, Bigalow's shaky cam and tough talking characters once again take us to the dark side of modern warfare.

In the absence of cinematic grandeur and didacticism, we're left as empty and as lost as Chastain's agent as she boards a symbolically empty plane for an uncertain future. Just what are we to think of the so-called War on Terror?

The viewer needs to stay sharp to stay on top of the details of the labyrinthine search, but Bigelow tackles the complex story with the same muscular urgency and incisive intelligence that won her an Oscar for The Hurt Locker.

Exhilarating cinema that makes you want to forget all the questionable issues of representation that have come before it.

This is a fascinating film, and Chastain's wonderful performance has something in it of the tragic sense of life.

So overwhelming is the momentum that it proves possible to live with the intelligence that the protagonist is complicit in ground-level fascism.

Blistering writing, directing and acting hold us firmly in our seats as this procedural drama snakes its way to a riveting action finale

Terrifically good, propulsive film-making ...

Remarkable and engaging piece of filmmaking considering the outcome of the story is well known. A sign of the times we live in and the processes put in place to wrangle the people that choose to live outside the realm of civility

Not what you'd call crowd-pleasing, this is fascinating - if occasionally harrowing - in its realistic depiction of the intricacies of CIA operations.

Against all the odds, Kathryn Bigelow's powerful story of the hunt is a taut and searing action thriller that keeps you gripped.

A silly, at times despicable film that never remotely deserved an Oscar nomination. Compared with this, Team America: World Police was a think piece.

We get all imaginable views of the witchy pentacle that is covert US military politics.

It haunts and lingers long after the lights go up.

Bigelow has crafted a riveting, entirely convincing procedural that shows us the long, frustrating pursuit of bin Laden through the eyes of Jessica Chastain's dogged CIA agent.

For much of its three hour running time, Zero Dark Thirty moves like a police procedural: it is rigorous, pared-back and analytical.

Goodell says agreement close on HGH testing

Roger Goodell

updated 1:08 p.m. ET Feb. 1, 2013

NEW ORLEANS - NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says he believes there will be an agreement soon with the players' union for testing for human growth hormone.

At his annual state of the NFL news conference Friday, Goodell said he expects an agreement for the tests to be reached in time for the start of the 2013 season.

Goodell noted that the league and union agreed to the testing two years ago in the collective bargaining agreement. He said it is important to have testing to retain the integrity and the brand of the league.

Goodell also said he is not going to give up his authority to discipline players for various offenses, something he said has served the league well over the years.

Why should women pump iron? | Hybrid Health and Fitness

Fitness Model Working Out

Lifting weights isn?t only for muscle-heads.

For over a decade I have been helping people live healthier lifestyles. The cornerstone of my advice is YOU?NEED TO EXERCISE! Exercise has many flavours which is great as a variety of activities is best for your body. Almost everyone understands the importance of cardiovascular fitness (cardio) but very few understand the importance of resistance training.

One of the most common reasons women give for not lifting weights is ?I don?t want to bulk up?. Ladies ? please throw this common misconception away! Testosterone is the primary ?muscle building? hormone within the body and men produce up to 20 times as much as women. Therefore unless you, as a female, are lifting really heavy weights (low rep/high set) and consuming a diet really high in animal protein and calories ? it is really hard to add muscle ?bulk?.

Here are 5 great reasons for women to lift weights and take their body to the NEXT LEVEL!

  1. Increased Metabolic Rate ? By adding new muscle to the body you are increasing the body?s ability to burn calories even at rest. Let?s face it ? most women when heading to the gym are thinking ? I need to burn calories!?Muscle has a higher energy?demand then fat so as you shave off fat and increase muscle you will burn more calories per day and stay leaner.
  2. Increased Tone & Bone?- Want to firm up your butt? Try doing some squats and lunges with weights and tighten up those gluts! Lifting weights will start to create new muscle?definition?that you didn?t even know you had. Also, by adding muscle you will increase your bone density and be less likely to develop osteoporosis (weak, fracture prone bones) as you age.
  3. Increased Libido ? By lifting weights and improving your body image you will become more comfortable naked. A small increase in testosterone (don?t worry ? it isn?t very much) can also make you crave ?sexy time? a little more often!
  4. AngelD2Increased Functional Strength ? By increasing overall strength you will be able to perform activities of daily living better. For example ? you and your partner purchase a funky sofa. Now you can help lift it up the stairs instead of calling over the weird man next door that tends to creep you out with his longer then socially acceptable stares.
  5. Decreased Chance of Injury ? As long as you use proper technique you will decrease your chances of injury. For example ? you?re walking on an icy sidewalk and your knee buckles slightly but you don?t fall down. Because you have strengthened your legs through resistance training the muscles provided stability in the knee. Compare that to someone with poor muscle development and they will likely have torn a ligament in the knee as their knee buckles and they fall down.

Some Tips to Incorporate Weights into your Workouts

If you decide on lifting weights a good set/rep combo is 3 sets of 8-12 reps. You should be using a weight that makes you?fatigued?as you approach the last rep. If you can easily do 10 or 12 reps then choose a heavier weight. Work each body part at least once a week. Multi-joint exercises are preferable, especially at the beginning of your workout (and more bang for your buck) then single isolation exercises like bicep curls. A few examples of multi-joint exercises are bench press, seated row, wide grip pull-downs, lunges, squats and deadlifts.

Incorporate resistance training in your workouts and get JACKED UP but not bulked up!

Note: If you are new to resistance exercise it is highly recommended you consult with a strength and conditioning professional.

Fears for those still trapped after explosion in Mexico City kills 25

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Emergency services worked into the early hours of Friday to find people trapped in rubble under state oil company Pemex's headquarters in Mexico City after an explosion that killed at least 25 people and injured more than 100.

Scenes of confusion and chaos at the downtown tower dealt yet another blow to Pemex's image as Mexico's new president courts outside investment for the 75-year-old monopoly.

Search and rescue workers picked through debris, and investigators sifted through shattered glass and concrete at the bottom of the building to try to find what caused the blast. It was not clear how many might still be trapped inside.

Pemex, a symbol of Mexican self-sufficiency as well as a byword in Mexico for security glitches, oil theft and frequent accidents, has been hamstrung by inefficiency, union corruption and a series of safety failures costing hundreds of lives.

Thursday's blast at the more than 50-storey skyscraper that houses administrative offices followed a September fire at a Pemex gas facility near the northern city of Reynosa which killed 30 people. More than 300 were killed when a Pemex natural gas plant on the outskirts of Mexico City blew up in 1984.

Eight years later, about 200 people were killed and 1,500 injured after a series of underground gas explosions in Guadalajara, Mexico's second biggest city. An official investigation found Pemex was partly to blame.

Pemex initially flagged Thursday's incident as a problem with its electricity supply and then said there had been an explosion. But it did not give a cause for the blast.

A government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a preliminary line of inquiry suggested a gas boiler had blown up in a Pemex building just to the side of the main tower. However, he stressed nothing had been determined for sure.

Others at the scene said gas may have caused the blast.

Not long after the blast, President Enrique Pena Nieto was at the scene, vowing to discover how it happened.

"We will work exhaustively to investigate exactly what took place, and if there are people responsible, to apply the force of the law on them," he told reporters before going to visit survivors in hospital.

Shortly after midnight, at least 46 victims were still being treated in hospital, the company said.

Pemex said the blast would not affect operations, but concern in the government was evident as top military officials, the attorney general and the energy minister joined Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong for a late news conference.

"I have issued instructions to the relevant authorities to convene national and international experts to help in the investigations," Osorio Chong said. He later noted that the number of casualties could still climb.

Whatever caused it, the deaths and destruction will put the spotlight back on safety at Pemex, which only a couple of hours before the explosion had issued a statement on Twitter saying the company had managed to improve its record on accidents.

Nieto has said he is giving top priority to reforming the company this year, though he has yet to reveal details of the plan, which already faces opposition from the left.

Both Pena Nieto and his finance minister were this week at pains to stress the company will not be privatized.

Downbeat earnings and data drag Britain's FTSE off highs

* FTSE 100 down 0.6 percent

* Royal Dutch, AstraZeneca updates disappoint

* RBS knocked as FSA opens door to swaps compensation

* Aggreko haunted by earnings worries

* BSkyB cheered by online sports coverage offer

LONDON, Jan 31 (Reuters) - Britain's top shares came off

multi-year highs on Thursday as a mixture of downbeat earnings

and macro economic data kept the bulls at bay ahead of important

jobs data and corporate results in the U.S.

By 1206 GMT, London's blue chip index was down 36.20

points, or 0.6 percent to 6,286.91, slipping away from highs hit

in mid-May 2008.

Following Italian oil service firm Saipem's shock

profit warning the previous session, which had a ripple effect

across the European equity markets, Royal Dutch Shell

alone took around 8 points off the UK blue chip index

on Thursday after the oil major's fourth quarter profit came in

nearly $400 million short of expectations

AstraZeneca fell 5.6 percent in heavy volume having

traded 180 percent of its 90-day daily average by 1206 GMT,

after the drugmaker warned the coming year will be tough.

Antofagasta toiled too, shedding 0.6 percent and

extending falls in the previous session when doubts were raised

over its earning outlook.

Sentiment was also hurt ahead of non-farm payroll data due

out on Friday by concerns about the U.S. economy a key market

for Britain's heavyweight exporters -- after data showed an

unexpected contraction in fourth quarter gross domestic product

and the U.S. Federal Reserve acknowledged that economic activity

had stalled.

"I think there's a general perception that equities were

overdue a pull back after the recent run, and with U.S. GDP

coming in with such a disappointing measure, it was going to

take big beats on earnings for the FTSE to push higher this

morning," Matt Basi, head sales trader at CMC Markets, said.

Recent results have put a dampener on the optimism among

investors, which had helped push the markets up towards

four-and-a-half year highs.

While 70 percent of European companies have so far beaten or

met earnings estimates in the current reporting season, top

analysts still expect fourth-quarter growth to fall 8.8 percent

year-on-year.

Analysts also forecast a 1.7 percent contraction in

fourth-quarter earnings in the U.S.

"It will be interesting to see how Mastercard and others

come in later. U.S. earnings have been a huge part of the push

higher since the turn of the year, so bulls will be looking for

more big corporate numbers if we're going to carry on shrugging

off the macro backdrop," CMC's Basi said.

DON'T BANK ON IT

There was more regulatory concerns shrouding the backdrop

for the banks, with Royal Bank of Scotland slipping 2.5

percent after the UK's financial regulator opened the door to

swaps compensation claims, which could cost UK banks millions.

The news came a day after Lloyds Banking Group

combination of concerns over its role in an industry-wide probe

into the alleged manipulation of Libor interest rates and broker

downgrades.

Temporary power provider Aggreko also extended its

falls over the last five trading days to more than 11 percent,

with traders citing recent press speculation surrounding the

potential for another warning on earnings when it reports in

March as weighing on the stock.

"The price fall has made the price-to-earnings ratio (16.8

times) look cheap, but as short interest has risen 5 percent in

the past week and there are 6.25 percent of free float shares on

loan, it suggests a number of investors agree with the press

speculation and that analysts should be sharpening their pencils

for more cuts to estimates," a London-based trader said.

Investors greeted BSkyB's offer to show its popular

sports channels online for a daily fee with enthusiasm, pushing

the shares up 1.4 percent as the company seeks new customers to

offset slowing growth at its core pay-TV service amid sluggish

consumer spending.

Diageo was the top riser up 1.8 percent after the

world's biggest spirits group ended talks to buy a stake in

top-selling tequila brand Jose Cuervo.

Biologistics: How fast do chemical trains move in living cells?

Jan. 31, 2013 ? The rate of chemical processes in cells is dictated by the speed of movement (diffusion) of molecules needed for a given reaction. Using a versatile method developed at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, researchers were able to predict for the first time the diffusion coefficients of all proteins in Escherichia coli. The achievement is important not only for biologists and chemists, but also for... transport companies.

Understanding of chemical foundations of life requires knowledge about the rate of chemical reactions in cells. The rates of these reactions depend on how fast the molecules taking part in reactions move (diffuse) in the cytoplasm. Prof. Robert Ho?yst's research team from the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw (IPC PAS) managed to determine -- for the first time -- the diffusion coefficients for virtually all the proteins occurring in Escherichia coli. The method developed by the researchers can also be used for other cells.

The movements of molecules in cells resemble a bit what's going on in railway stations. But the differences are obvious at first glance. "Regular trains leave stations at fixed times, whereas in cells transport processes take place virtually all the time. That's why it doesn't make sense to ask what time does the train with specific molecules leave the station. But it definitely makes sense to ask how fast the train with specific molecules is moving!," explains Prof. Robert Ho?yst (IPC PAS).

Transport efficiency of chemical compounds in cells became inspiring for many transport companies. There's talk of biologistics as modelling vehicle or rail transport by looking up to what's going on inside the cells. Prof. Ho?yst, however, has no illusions about that: "Everyone is delighted, for in cells the transport is so wonderfully resistant to perturbations. They forget, however, that the transport results from random fluctuations, in addition occurring in a small volume, where viscosity depends not only on the medium, but also on the size of the viscosity probe! I wish good luck all those who want to transfer processes occurring in physically so different environment to our roads. Biologistics works excellent, but inside cells only!."

Supported by grants from the National Science Center and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education as well as by programs from the Foundation for Polish Science, the research published in the "Bioinformatics" journal focused on the rate of diffusion of protein molecules in the Escherichia coli cytoplasm.

"The viscosity inside mammalian cells is relatively low, only 60 times higher than that of water. But bacteria are considerably smaller, everything is more crowded. The macroscopic viscosity there is up to 26,000 times higher than that of water. This is really dramatic difference!," concludes Dr Tomasz Kalwarczyk (IPC PAS).

Earlier research of Prof. Ho?yst's team allowed for concluding that viscosity experienced by molecules is not only medium, i.e., solvent dependent, but also depends on the size and shape of molecules. Therefore, in the same medium, molecules differing in shape and size can experience very low viscosity (nanoviscosity) or macroscopic viscosity that is up to several thousand times higher. The previous methods for predicting diffusion coefficients in cytoplasm have not accounted for the effect.

Experimental determination of the diffusion rates of chemical compounds in bacterial cells is both time consuming and difficult. As a result, diffusion coefficients have been measured only for a very limited number of compounds in only some bacterial cells. That's why the researchers from the IPC PAS developed a method for predicting diffusion coefficients for various compounds and media. For that purpose they used their own formulae, accounting for nanoviscosity and macroscopic viscosity, and a few dozens of diffusion coefficients of macromolecules in Escherichia coli taken from the literature. This was a basis for construction of a scale-dependent viscosity reference curve that could be used to determine diffusion coefficients of remaining compounds.

The database constructed at the IPC PAS contains diffusion coefficients for complete proteome of Escherichia coli. It includes over 6000 macromolecules, with about 4300 gene-expressed amino acid chains and their various, often multiple combinations (polymers), created both by the same chains (homomers), and by different amino acids (heteromers).

"Because of easy access to the literature data, we created a database only for molecules occurring in Escherichia coli. Our method could be, however, adapted for virtually any cell and every molecule, for instance for determining diffusion coefficients of sugars in mammalian cells," stresses Dr Marcin Tabaka (IPC PAS).
