Siri 'Eyes Free' mode comes to six more Chevy cars

Apple's personal assistant is integrated into a handful of new vehicles, letting users make calls, text, and access their calendars with a voice activation button on the steering wheel.

Chevrolet integrated Apple's personal assistant Siri into two cars last year, and it's gone so well that the company is adding the functionality to six more vehicles.

The way Siri integration works is by wirelessly connecting to the Chevy MyLink infotainment system via Bluetooth. This allows people with newer generations of the iPhone, iPad, iPad Mini, or iPod Touch running iOS 6 or iOS 7 to perform Siri-related tasks using a voice activation button on their car's steering wheel.

In this "Eyes Free" mode, users can make calls, access their calendars, play songs from their iTunes libraries, and listen to and compose text messages -- all with voice activation. However, to avoid distraction, the iPhone screen won't light up when Siri chats with the user.

"The response to Siri Eyes Free integration in Chevy Sonic and Spark from our customers has been remarkable," Chevrolet Vice President of U.S. Marketing Chris Perry said in a statement. "Easy, reliable, and portable connectivity is a top priority for our customers."

Chevrolet first announced Siri integration on both the Chevrolet Spark and Sonic in September 2012. The voice assistant will now come with the 2014 Camaro, Cruze, Equinox, Malibu, SS, and Volt.

While Chevy was one of the first car companies to offer Siri compatibility, a handful of other automakers will also offer the feature. Honda has added the voice assistant to some of its 2013 Honda and Acura vehicles; and other companies, like BMW, General Motors, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari, and Audi have also signed on for Siri integration.
