Apple exec Eddy Cue joins Ferrari board of directors, raises hopes for truly high-tech exotic cars

Apple exec Eddy Cue joins Ferrari board of directors, raises hopes of highertech exotics

Ferrari loves to extol the advances found in its drivetrains, but the unspoken rule is that its interior technology leaves something to be desired; unless you're thinking of a 458's manettino, even a less expensive car like the Tesla Model S is virtually in another league. The automaker may be narrowing that gap by putting Apple online lead Eddy Cue on the Ferrari board of directors. Without giving too much away, Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo points to Cue's experience with the "dynamic, innovative world of the internet" as the motivation -- as good a sign as any that the Maranello team wants to take connected cars seriously. Whenever the Apple Senior VP's experience comes into full effect, we may see one of the few supercar lineups whose cabins are as advanced as the engines. Just don't look for any tight integration with Ferrari-badged Acer gear in the near future.

Spelman College Slashes Athletics Department in Favor of Health ...

FROM THE GRIO ? Spelman College, the all female HBCU, has made the difficult choice to abandon its athletic program in exchange for improved fitness facilities and a more inclusive wellness program for its students.

Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

?When I was looking at the decision, it wasn?t being driven by the cost as much as the benefit. With $1 million, 80 student athletes are benefiting. Or, should we invest in a wellness program that would touch every student?s life??

Spelman might not influence other schools in the region where sports are more intertwined with the identity of the university. But some schools suffering from deep budget cuts could consider following suit.

Tatum is more concerned with the students? health and the responsibility to help. She told the Journal-Constitution, ?one out of every two students has high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes or is obese.?

?I have been to funerals of young alums who were not taking care of themselves,? she said, ?and I believe we can change that pattern not only for them but for the broader community.?

HBCUs have endured bleak financial reports in the recent months, including the collapse of Morris Brown and alleged money woes at Morehouse College.

Recently, $228 million in grants were given to HBCUs by the Department of Education. Many have speculated about how that money would be managed when schools like Morris Brown were in financial peril due to financial mismanagement, corruption, financial aid theft and foreclosure.

3 Ways The Career-Savvy Stand Out - Career ... - Outshine Consulting

Post image for 3 Ways The Career-Savvy Stand Out From The Crowd

Do you feel uncomfortable bragging about your achievements or boasting about what makes you good at your job?? You?re not alone, but the problem is that knowing how to promote yourself well is an essential ingredient in any successful career and something that many shy away from because they feel uncomfortable talking about what makes them great!? Playing yourself down, or simply keeping quiet when you?ve done a good job, won?t help you get ahead and in fact can have quite the opposite effect.? Thankfully there are 3 easy steps you can take to start promoting yourself well without needing a serenade or fanfare to be heard?

3 Simple Steps To Promote Yourself

I help a lot of clients overhaul their resumes and one thing that most people are guilty of is listing their responsibilities instead of engaging the reader with examples of how they?re good at their job.? This mindset also tends to flow through into interviews and performance appraisals where they do the same instead of really highlighting what they?ve achieved and how they?ve added value to the team or business they work in.

Promoting yourself well is more about mindset and feeling comfortable talking about your achievements.? It doesn?t mean you need to ram your latest accolade down someones throat but you do need to do more than simply hope that the person you?re talking to will somehow miraculously realise how great you are.

Being able to tell others why you should be hired, promoted or referred to is an important component in career development and not something to shy away from.? So to get started, there are 3 key areas that I recommend you get clear on so that when you?re in a position to promote yourself you draw attention to your best assets and feel comfortable in the process: -

1.? Add Value

Being able to articulate how you add value to a business and/or clients is something every hiring manager, boss and potential new client wants to hear so it?s important you?re crystal clear on HOW you do that and are able to convey your message to others.

For example, talking about the fact that you manage a team is not how you add value ? that?s simply listing a responsibility.? However, mentioning how you?ve grown your team and improved retention rates during a challenging restructure and that productivity has improved by 35% paints a much clearer picture of how you?ve added value to that business.

Action: Write down at least 5 specific examples of how you?ve added value in your current job.

2.? Solve A Problem

Every team and business has a problem from time to time, some more than others, so if you can talk about how you?ve solved a specific problem previously you instantly become more valuable than someone who avoids tricky situations.

Being able to tell your boss that you?ve solved an issue and how it?s beneficial to your team or company is a great way to improve your value in that organisation and promote yourself as someone who?s an asset to the business.

Action: Write down at least 5 specific examples of how you?ve solved a problem in your career and what the outcome was, attributing facts and figures that back up the results where possible.

3.? Make/Save Money

Every business is about making money in some sense or another, so being able to explain how you?ve personally helped make or save money in a organisation is another skill that?s definitely worth promoting.? Any hiring manager worth their salt will be interested in specifics of this nature so whether you?re looking for a new job, or trying to get ahead in your current position, make sure you?re clear on how you?ve improved the bottom line at work.

Action: Write down at least 5 specific examples of how you?ve saved or made money in your career so far and how you did that.? Importantly, you don?t have to be in a sales role to be able to demonstrate this kind of information ? just think about the bigger picture and how your job fits in to the objectives of the business.? If you?re an Executive Assistant for example, perhaps you?ve organised an event where you negotiated a cheaper venue rate, or maybe the way you bulk order stationary saves the company money.

Once you have clear examples of these 3 key areas in your mind make sure you convey them on your resume, LinkedIn profile, in interview, at networking events and in meetings with your boss where appropriate.? Getting clear on what makes you an asset will also help increase your confidence and help you feel more comfortable taking about your achievements to others.

What it takes to be a teenage politician ? CNN Radio News - CNN ...

By Tommy Andres, CNN

(CNN) ? Most 18-year-olds are excited for election Tuesday because it will be their first chance to vote. Aziz Akbari is excited for a different reason: his name is on a ballot.

Akbari is a sophomore at the University of Southern California studying mechanical engineering, and this year he?s thrown his hat in the ring for mayor of his hometown of Fremont, California.

[:59] ?I?ve been going to city council meetings since I was 8 years old,? Akbari says. ?And I?ve been involved in local politics ever since then.?

Akbari campaigns from his dorm room all week with the help of his campaign staff, and flies home every weekend to go door-to-door, press the flesh, and push his four-point plan to boost Fremont?s economy.

But if Akbari is elected, he certainly won?t be the first teen to take charge of a city or a district.

John Tyler Hammons served two terms as mayor of Muskogee, Oklahoma after being elected as a college freshman, and Michael Sessions famously ran the city of Hillsdale, Michigan from his bedroom in his parents? house as a high school senior.

Nick Kettle won a seat on the Rhode Island state senate at 19, but to garner support he had to go outside of his own home.

[3:15] ?My parents were absolutely dead set against me running. I came home from declaring and my father screamed at me for like ten minutes saying, ?why are you doing this? You have no platform. I?m not even going to vote for you.? They thought I was absolutely crazy.?

Kettle, Hammons and Sessions all have advice for Akbari, and some reflections on their own time in office, as they share what it?s like to be a teenage politician.

South Africa's Vision of a New World Order

Jacob Zuma (Stephane de Sakutin/AFP/Getty Images)

(The Root) -- South African President Jacob Zuma began his remarks to the press corps this week with an ode to two men.

The first, predictably, was former President Nelson Mandela, a 94-year-old anti-apartheid icon and Nobel Peace laureate who is seen as the father of modern South Africa. The second man he named, however, is a telling indicator of where Africa's economic powerhouse sees itself -- and how the nation seems to be resisting the tide of American hegemony. It was Cuban Communist leader Fidel Castro.

In that speech earlier this week, Zuma hailed Castro as "one of the revolutionary icons in the fight for freedom and equity in a world free from oppression, exploitation and prejudice."

South Africa has historically leaned left -- Zuma and his cohorts in the African National Congress refer to one another as "comrade," and the ruling coalition counts the South African Communist Party as an important member of the bloc. But one of the reasons South Africa may be pulling back from Western hegemony could be that it wants to distance itself from the current global economic crisis. Also, South Africa pushed for its finance minister to head the World Bank and clearly feels that its economic voice is not being heard.

The United States has close and positive diplomatic relations with South Africa, but this hasn't always been the case. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney dredged up that fact from the past in the third presidential debate, when he equated Iran with apartheid-era South Africa.

"I would also make sure that their diplomats are treated like the pariah they are around the world," he said, referring to Iran, "the same way we treated the apartheid diplomats of South Africa."

These days, it seems as if South Africa is the one turning away a little bit. That's exemplified by two recent South African actions: its decision to join a grouping of developing nations in 2011 and Zuma's current crusade for more African representation on the United Nations Security Council.

"There is a little bit of ideology of not letting the North tell us what to do, but at the same time, our main trading partner is the European Union, and the U.S. is an extremely important trading partner," said Tom Wheeler, a former South African diplomat who works as a research associate with the South African Institute of International Affairs.

Wheeler -- whose first diplomatic posting was to Washington, D.C., in November 1963, the same month as the Kennedy assassination -- said that the ANC leaders' love of Cuba is a relic of the struggle against apartheid. Cuba sided with the anti-apartheid movement by fighting against South Africa's apartheid government in Angola in the 1970s.
