Watching quantum mechanics in action: Researchers create world record laser pulse

ScienceDaily (Sep. 4, 2012) ? A University of Central Florida research team has created the world's shortest laser pulse and in the process may have given scientists a new tool to watch quantum mechanics in action -- something that has been hidden from view until now.

UCF Professor Zenghu Chang from the Department of Physics and the College of Optics and Photonics, led the effort that generated a 67-attosecond pulse of extreme ultraviolet light. The results of his research are published online under Early Posting in the journal Optics Letters.

An attosecond is an incomprehensible quintillionith of a second. In other words it would take 15 million billion pulses of the size Chang's team achieved to equal one second. The accomplishment is even more remarkable because the team did it without the use of specialized equipment including a mile-long particle accelerator or a Superdome-sized synchrotron.

"Dr. Chang's success in making ever-shorter light pulses helps open a new door to a previously hidden world, where we can watch electrons move in atoms and molecules, and follow chemical reactions as they take place," said Michael Johnson, the dean of the UCF College of Sciences and a physicist. "It is astounding to imagine that we may now be able to watch quantum mechanics in process."

Quantum mechanics is the study of physics at the microscopic level, specifically looking at energy and matter on this miniscule scale.

There is much excitement about the accomplishment and the promise Chang's work holds for helping scientists understand how the world's smallest building blocks actually work. The technique could lead scientists to understand how energy can be harnessed to transport data, deliver targeted cancer therapies or diagnose disease. The finding marks the first significant breakthrough in the laser pulse field in four years.

In 2001, attosecond pulses were demonstrated for the first time. Since then scientists around the world have been trying to make ever-shorter pulse durations because of the door they could open to understanding the subatomic world. The previous record of an 80-attosecond pulse was set in 2008 at the Max Planck Institute in Garching, Germany. This is the first time an American-led team has set the record.

"The quest for generating shorter and shorter pulses of light has been ongoing since the invention of the laser more than five decades ago," said Bahaa Saleh, dean of CREOL, the College of Optics and Photonics. "Dr. Chang's recent advance brings UCF to the forefront of this Olympic race and opens up new frontiers for seeing and recording ultrafast dynamic atomic phenomena."

Chang's team was able to accomplish the work at the Florida Atto Science &Technology (FAST) lab in UCF's Physical Sciences building.

Using the unprecedented power of laser light enables Chang and his peers to conduct their high-level research in much smaller spaces. Chang's group created a technique called Double Optical Grating that allows extreme ultraviolet light to be cut off in a manner that concentrates the maximum amount of energy in the shortest possible pulse of light. With the affinity for acronyms shared by many ultrafast laser physicists, Chang named the technique DOG. In addition to creating the light pulse, he created an even faster camera to measure it, which is the Phase Retrieval by Omega Oscillation Filtering (PROOF).

The Department of Defense's Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative and the National Science Foundation helped fund the research.

Others who contributed to the team's discovery include: Kun Zhao, Qi Zhang, Michael Chini, Yi Wu, and Xiaowei Wang, all at UCF. UCF Stands For Opportunity --The University of Central Florida is a metropolitan research university that ranks as the second largest in the nation with more than 59,000 students. Cameron keeps Osborne in shuffle of ministers

LONDON (Reuters) - David Cameron kept his unpopular Chancellor George Osborne in a reshuffle of his cabinet on Tuesday that he hopes will revive the Conservative-led government's fortunes in the middle of a term dominated by recession.

Cameron's office has billed the rejig as a game changer but heavyweights such as Foreign Secretary William Hague are seen staying put and few changes are expected in policy.

The prime minister's scope for a sweeping overhaul is limited by the constraints of life in coalition with the left-leaning Lib Dems and the danger of creating powerful enemies in his Conservatives at a delicate time for the party.

Osborne, a close Cameron ally, was booed by crowds before he presented medals to Paralympics winners on Monday night, highlighting discontent with budget cuts that have repeatedly missed the government's targets and the general economic gloom.

"He's definitely staying put," a source familiar with the reshuffle discussions told Reuters.

Polls show many Britons think Osborne should be sacked but replacing too many senior ministers could be interpreted as an admission of policy failure, particularly on the economy.

Cameron is expected instead to beef up his economic team by giving Justice Secretary Ken Clarke - a former chancellor - a new role with an economics brief. Lib Dem David Laws, another respected economic brain, was also likely to be given a ministerial role.

INTERNAL DISCIPLINE

The reshuffle is expected to be more of an exercise in improving Cameron's relationship with his party, with positions for high flyers from the Conservative populist right and even its "euro sceptic" wing which demands a tougher line on Brussels.

Government officials argue that shifting Osborne from his post would raise questions on financial markets about Cameron's resolve in tackling Britain's large budget deficit.

Cameron, who has seen his party's popularity fall as the economy sours, has stuck to his guns with austerity, hoping that growth will return before the next parliamentary election in 2015.

Osborne's March budget cut taxes for the richest while raising levies on the elderly, leading to criticism the coalition was out of touch with those at the bottom of the ladder struggling in the downturn.

In one of two early confirmed changes, Cameron moved International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell to take charge of internal party discipline in parliament.

Mitchell, a former U.N. peace keeper, will become "Chief Whip," tasked with keeping in line restive Conservative backbench politicians who have already forced a U-turn over constitutional reform and want to rewrite Britain's relationship with the European Union.

Theresa Villiers was appointed as Northern Ireland minister.

Suicide attack targets US in Pakistan

A suicide car bomber struck a US consulate vehicle in Pakistan on Monday, killing four people in the deadliest attack targeting Americans for two years in the frontline state in the war on Al-Qaeda.

The US State Department said no American consulate personnel were killed, but a regional Pakistani cabinet minister insisted two Americans were among the dead.

Up to 19 people were wounded when the bomber struck during the morning rush hour in the northwestern city of Peshawar, near the office of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and residential quarters used by the US consulate.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but it was at least the third time that the consulate and its staff have been targeted by militants linked to the Taliban and Al-Qaeda since April 2010.

The US State Department said a consulate vehicle was hit in an apparent terrorist strike but said no US consulate staff were killed.

Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said two Americans and two Pakistanis working for the mission were receiving medical treatment for their wounds, and that the United States was "seeking further information about other victims".

But Mian Iftikhar Hussain, information minister for Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, said four people were killed, two of them Americans.

When asked to comment on the US statement, Hussain said: "What can I do if they are denying? Police confirmed to me that two of the dead were American diplomats."

Pakistani security officials told AFP that the US vehicle was the target and a half-burnt US passport was recovered from a vehicle after the attack.

Peshawar police chief Imtiaz Altaf said 19 people were wounded in the blast and that the bomber's vehicle had been packed with up to 110 kilogrammes (240 pounds) of explosives, including more than 10 mortar shells.

An AFP reporter saw two dead bodies in a hospital morgue, one of which was burnt beyond recognition. The other appeared to be of a local resident.

Police said they believed the two bodies belonged to passers by.

Mohammad Sadid, 35, said he was driving to work at his pharmacy when he heard a deafening blast on the opposite side of the road in University Town neighbourhood.

"It was so powerful that it jolted my car with a massive jerk. My head banged the steering wheel and the wind shield. I couldn't understand what had happened. I saw a car on fire. It became a large fireball," he told AFP.

The explosion left a crater in the road, damaged vehicles and demolished the facing walls of four nearby houses, an AFP reporter said.

Hussain called the bombing "a dangerous move from the terrorists", adding that "they want to terrorise the foreigners".

Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked militant groups who are sworn enemies of the United States frequently carry out attacks and have strongholds in the nearby tribal belt.

They have vowed to avenge American drone strikes targeting Islamist militants in Pakistan's semi-autonomous tribal areas and thwart a rumoured prospective Pakistani offensive in North Waziristan.

Although Islamabad is an ally of Washington, relations dramatically worsened after a CIA contractor killed two Pakistanis in the eastern city of Lahore and US special forces found and killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan last year.

The United States is currently weighing up whether to blacklist as terrorists the Al-Qaeda-linked Haqqani network, whose leaders are understood to be based in Pakistan, in a move that could further damage already fraught ties with Islamabad.

The United States heads around 130,000 NATO troops in Afghanistan but is preparing to hand over security responsibility to Afghans by the end of 2014.

Anti-American sentiment in Pakistan has increased since Islamabad agreed in July to end a seven-month blockade on NATO goods crossing into Afghanistan. The blockade was imposed after botched US air strikes killed 24 Pakistani soldiers last November.

On Monday, gunmen in southwestern Pakistan attacked three NATO supply trucks, injuring three drivers and torching two of the lorries, police said.

In May 2011, a Taliban bomb damaged a US consulate vehicle and wounded two US government employees in Peshawar just days after American commandos killed bin Laden in a raid on his Pakistan hideout.

In April 2010, a Taliban gun, grenade and double suicide car bomb attack on the consulate killed five Pakistanis but failed to penetrate the compound.

In February 2010, three American military personnel were among eight killed in a bomb attack at the inauguration of a renovated girls' school in the northwestern district of Lower Dir.
