Seabirds on B.C., Washington, Oregon coast eating bellyfuls of plastic: Study

Seabirds eat everything from twine, candy wrappers and Styrofoam, and their stomach contents show there?s been a dramatic increase in plastic pollution off the Pacific Northwest coast in the last four decades, a new study suggests.

University of British Columbia researcher Stephanie Avery-Gomm said the amount of plastic a northern fulmar gobbles up provides a snapshot of the garbage that ends up in a big part of the Pacific Ocean.

The results of the study mirror that of various European countries? research done last year of the notoriously polluted North Sea, although the situation seems to be improving there, Ms. Avery-Gomm said.

Necropsies of 67 of the beached gull-like seabirds collected between October 2009 and April 2010 from the coasts of B.C., Washington and Oregon indicated nearly 93 per cent of them had bellyfuls of plastic, she said.

One bird had 454 pieces of plastic in its gut, said Ms. Avery-Gomm, the study?s lead author and graduate of the university?s zoology department.

She said the results of the study, published online in the journal Marine Pollution Bulletin, suggest plastic pollution should be monitored annually and people need to be aware of the long-term effects of what they?re tossing out.

?Anything that gets into a river, anything that gets into the sewage system, anything that ends up on a beach is probably headed straight for the ocean.?

The graceful northern fulmars breed in Alaska, are cousins of the albatross and are oceanic creatures that don?t often venture onto shore.

They also don?t regurgitate the plastic they consume from the surface of the ocean. Ingesting it can directly kill the birds or cause gastrointestinal blockage, lacerations and reduced feeding.

While many countries have documented plastic debris in the marine environment, no standard technique has been used, and the lack of consistent methodology has made it difficult to monitor trends or to compare plastic pollution between different regions of the world, the study says.

?This highlights the need for a reliable, internationally standardized method of monitoring trends in plastic pollution.?

About 260 marine species, including turtles, fish and seabirds are known to become entangled in plastic or eat it.

Northern fulmars are ideal biological monitors of trends in plastic pollution because they have a vast migratory range, forage just about anything in the environment and are prone to washing up on beaches in sufficient numbers.

The first study of plastic ingestion in the birds was conducted south of the Alaska Peninsula in 1980 by the University of Alaska. It found that 58 per cent of the birds collected between 1969 and 1977 had consumed plastic.

The current study shows that the incidence of plastic ingestion among northern fulmars is 92.5 per cent, Ms. Avery-Gomm said.

The mass of plastic that?s eaten also increased dramatically ? from 0.04 grams in 1969-1977 to 0.385 grams in the current study, she said, adding the average northern fulmar weighs about 800 grams.

Ms. Avery-Gomm said further study is needed, possibly combining the efforts of Canadian and American researchers.

?It would be totally feasible to have a Canada-U.S. collaborative effort where people in Alaska collect fulmar there, we collect fulmar here, Washington and Oregon and California all collect their fulmar and we all dissect them according to these internationally standardized protocols and compare results. That?s what they?re doing in the North Sea.?

Her concerns about the awareness of disposing plastic were echoed by Karen Wristen, spokeswoman for the Living Oceans Society.

?At the national level there needs to be some kind of response beyond voluntary beach cleanups that?s going to deal with the amount that accumulates on public lands,? Ms. Wristen said.

?And of course, globally, we need to raise awareness in other nations of exactly the same problems, and getting them working on them. It is a huge, huge problem to deal with and one that can?t simply be solved at one level.?

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) ? Details from a decade-old email are raising new questions about Joe Paterno's response to a sex abuse complaint regarding former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, but a Paterno family spokesman says he's not worried about the impact on the late coach's legacy.

Family spokesman Dan McGinn said Tuesday that Paterno never directed him to protect his legacy or clear his name. McGinn says Paterno believed his record would speak for itself.

The Paterno family wants all emails and records related to the Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal to be released.

CNN has reported that an email by the school's athletic director in 2001 indicates he changed his mind about going to child welfare authorities after speaking with Paterno.

Sandusky awaits sentencing after being convicted last month of 45 counts.

A Texas judge on Tuesday found a JetBlue pilot insane and not guilty of interfering with a flight after his bizarre behavior forced an emergency landing in March.

Clayton Osbon, 49, had been charged with interference with a flight crew and could have faced up to 20 years in prison.

Court documents show U.S. District Judge Mary Lou Robinson in Amarillo, Texas, received a report from a psychological examination that concluded, "at the time of the commission of the offense, the defendant appeared to suffer from a severe mental disease or defect that impaired his ability to appreciate the nature, quality, or wrongfulness of his behavior."

All parties, including the prosecutors, agreed to the report.

Last month, Judge Robinson declared Osbon fit to stand trial, saying he was "not now suffering from a mental disease or defect" that would make it impossible for him to assist in his own defense.

Osbon had been examined by a government-appointed psychologist who did not address whether he was sane at the time of the March 27 incident.

Witnesses said Osbon had to be wrestled to the floor of the plane that was heading from New York to Las Vegas after he began sprinting down the aisle, yelling that "Things don't matter," and talking about Afghanistan, Iraq and al-Qaeda.

Before being locked out of the flight deck by the first officer, the FBI said Osbon had tried to interfere with the plane's controls and began rambling, saying, "We're not going to Vegas," and warning the first officer that "We're going to have to take a leap of faith."

Judge Robinson ordered that Osbon be taken to a prison in Fort Worth, Texas, for a mental examination, then returned to court for an August 6 hearing, where his fate will be up to the judge.

Under federal law, people found not guilty by reason of insanity can be incarcerated until they can establish that they are entitled to be released.

Several passengers on board the flight have filed suit against JetBlue for gross negligence, saying the airline should have known that he was unfit for duty as a pilot.

How Tony Stewart's NASCAR Tech Trickles Down to Your Car

The strict NASCAR regulations that control fuel, aerodynamics, and most other parts of the race cars force teams to get pretty creative in search of a competitive advantage. For three-time NASCAR champ Tony Stewart, the next frontier in racing tech is something that sounds simple, but the team hopes could make all the difference: grease.

We recently headed down to Dover International Speedway to see for ourselves what's going into the No. 14 car. The Stewart?Hass team has a unique "technology partnership" with Mobil, and Tony's car runs several custom lubricant formulas in the seven or eight different places it uses lubricants.

The engine, for instance, runs a low-friction formula of Mobil 1 created just for Stewart?Hass (NASCAR teams can get very aggressive with their oil blends since the engines need to last just 500 miles). The most shocking statistic: The "low-traction" differential grease the Mobil boys created for Stewart lowers the differential temperature in the 14 car by 80 F. Such a decrease in friction can provide a meaningful advantage when the racing is tight.

"Lower-traction lubes generate less heat due to the properties of the oils," Mobil U.S. Motorsports technology adviser Roger C. Hood says. "This results in increased horsepower to the rear wheels and greater efficiency, which leads to better fuel economy and more on-track time. The high differential temperatures are a result of friction, and it was a drastic reduction in friction that led to the corresponding decrease in temperature."

Mobil engineers are hoping to use what they've learned from the development of Stewart's special grease in a low-friction consumer automotive engine oil, but they are still in the early research stages. They've still got to refine the formula, field test it, and establish its durability characteristics before releasing it to consumers.

Other NASCAR technology trickles down to consumers in a similarly roundabout way. Tires, for examples: A blowout in NASCAR could be catastrophic, so all tires on the Sprint Cup and Nationwide cars and Craftsman Trucks have an inner air container that allows the car to continue rolling even if the tire?which the Goodyear engineers call the outer air container?is compromised. It's a development that goes back to the 1966, when Goodyear started manufacturing the inner liners.

The tall tire sidewalls in NASCAR mean that a race car would lose all steering capability if a normal tire deflated. The inner air container's sole job is to reach past the chassis to the ground in the event of a blowout. While the outer air container has all the technology you'd expect from a regular racing tire?various plies and layers of fiber?the inner air container is made only of rubber, rather like an inner tube. But the inner layer of a NASCAR tire isn't quite like an inner tube in that itdoesn't press against the outer layer. Thus, each wheel needs two valves stems?one for each air container.

It's not easy to fit those inner air containers inside a tire. They're softer than a tire but still quite stiff, and the opening in the tire is just big enough to fit over a 15-inch wheel, so a lot of manpower and finesse is required to stuff the large inner container into the outer container. At Dover, we saw an experienced Goodyear mechanic insert an inner liner in less than 10 seconds, and it was clear that he knew a few tricks. First, he wedged the inner liner tread-first as far as it would go into the hole of the tire. Then he flipped them both over and twisted the inner liner before tugging it farther into the tire. He then flipped the tire back over and repeated the twisting and tugging until the inner liner was in place. NASCAR crew members have plenty of opportunity to practice; between the racing cars and trucks, about 2000 tires are used during each race weekend. Each one has an inner liner to keep drivers safe in the event of a tire puncture.

If this sounds familiar, it's because the same kind of technology is now in the run-flat tires that come on many cars. Goodyear's RunOnFlat tires have stiffer sidewalls than normal tires and no inner liner, but the concept is the same: It lets a driver maintain control in the event of a loss of tire pressure. RunOnFlat's stiff sidewall makes sense for a passenger car, since the tires fit on a standard rim (and have only one valve stem), and in the real world, a flat tire has to make it farther than one lap around the track.

Long rumored to be gay, the actor, most famous for his roles on "Heroes" and in the recent "Star Trek" film, came out in a October 2011 <em>New York</em> magazine profile, saying: <blockquote>"In light of Jamey's [Rodemeyer] death -- it became clear to me in an instant that living a gay life without publicly acknowledging it -- is simply not enough to make any significant contribution to the immense work that lies ahead on the road to complete equality. Our society needs to recognize the unstoppable momentum toward unequivocal civil equality for every gay lesbian bisexual and transgendered citizen of this country."</blockquote>

In <a href="http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/elton-john-lonely-at-the-top-rolling-stones-1976-cover-story-20110202" target="_hplink">an interview</a> with <em>Rolling Stone</em> in October 1976, the rock star came out by saying, "There's nothing wrong with going to bed with somebody of your own sex. I think everybody's bisexual to a certain degree. I don't think it's just me. It's not a bad thing to be. I think you're bisexual. I think everybody is."

The comedian and actress came out in November 2008 <a href="http://thestrippodcast.blogspot.com/2008/11/wanda-sykes-lv-gay-rally-im-proud-to-be.html" target="_hplink">while speaking at an anti-Prop 8 rally</a> in Las Vegas. Sykes said in part: <blockquote>"I got married Oct. 25, I don't really talk about my sexual orientation, I felt like I was living my life, I wasn't in the closet, but I was just living my life. Everybody who knows me personally, they know I'm gay. And that's the way people should be able to live our lives, really. We shouldn't have to be standing out here demanding something we automatically should have as citizens of this country."</blockquote>

In March 2009 pop star Ricky Martin <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/29/ricky-martin-comes-out-im_n_517625.html" target="_hplink">posted a message on his website</a> telling the world, "I am a fortunate homosexual man."

Chely Wright, 2010

Country singer Chely Wright <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20365936,00.html" target="_hplink">came out in May 2010</a>. She told <em>People</em> magazine, "There had never, ever been a country music artist who had acknowledged his or her homosexuality... I wasn't going to be the first." But she changed her mind and said of her decision, "Nothing in my life has been more magical than the moment I decided to come out."

George Michael, 1998

After being caught performing a "lewd act" in a public restroom, Michael came out to CNN in April 1998. <a href="http://www.cnn.com/SHOWBIZ/9804/11/george.michael/" target="_hplink">Michael said</a>, "This is as good of a time as any... I want to say that I have no problem with people knowing that I'm in a relationship with a man right now. I have not been in a relationship with a woman for almost 10 years." Later that year Michael spoofed the incident in the music video for his single "Outside."

Don Lemon, 2011

The CNN news anchor came out to the <em>New York Times</em> in May 2011. Lemon <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/16/business/media/16anchor.html?_r=3" target="_hplink">told the paper</a>, "It's quite different for an African-American male... It's about the worst thing you can be in black culture. You're taught you have to be a man; you have to be masculine. In the black community they think you can pray the gay away."

Adam Lambert, 2009

The singer's sexuality was always a topic of discussion for viewers when he was performing on "American Idol," but Lambert didn't come out until after the competition had wrapped. In a June 2009 <em>Rolling Stone</em> cover story, Lambert said, "Right after the finale [of "AI"], I almost started talking about it to the reporters, but I thought, 'I'm going to wait for <em>Rolling Stone</em>, that will be cooler,'.. I didn't want the Clay Aiken thing and the celebrity-magazine bullshit. I need to be able to explain myself in context."

The "Doogie Howser, MD" and "How I Met Your Mother Star" came out on the cover of <em>People</em> magazine in November of 2006. <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,1554852,00.html" target="_hplink">Harris told the magazine</a>: <blockquote>"The public eye has always been kind to me, and until recently I have been able to live a pretty normal life. Now it seems there is speculation and interest in my private life and relationships. Chaz Bono, 2009

Chaz Bono revealed his plan to transition in May 2009. TMZ.com broke the story <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2009/06/11/chastity-bono-becoming-a-man/#.TptSZ2VPkqU" target="_hplink">via a prepared statement</a> from Bono's publicist that read, in part: <blockquote>"Yes, it's true -- Chaz, after many years of consideration, has made the courageous decision to honor his true identity... He is proud of his decision and grateful for the support and respect that has already been shown by his loved ones. It is Chaz's hope that his choice to transition will open the hearts and minds of the public regarding this issue, just as his 'coming out' did nearly 20 years ago."</blockquote>

Chris Colfer, 2009

The "Glee" actor came out on the "Chelsea Lately Show" in December 2009: Chelsea Handler: "Your character on the show's gay. We know that you're gay. That's good for you. Congratulations. Don't be shy about that. Seriously. You shouldn't be shy about that because every time...an actor like you is helping a zillion other people that are scared to talk about their sexuality so good for you." Chris Colfer: "Thank you. You know what my answer to that question was prior to coming out -- was that I was straight as every other actor in Hollywood."

Meredith Baxter, 2009

In December 2009 Baxter, most famous for playing Elyse Keaton on '80s sitcom "Family Ties," went on the "Today Show" and told Matt Lauer that she was a lesbian. Baxter said, "Some people would say, well, you're living a lie and, you know, the truth is -- not at all. This has only been for the past seven years."

Lance Bass, 2006

The 'N Sync pop star came out on the cover of <em>People</em> magazine in July 2006. When asked why he decided to come out then, <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,1219142,00.html" target="_hplink">Bass said</a>, "The main reason I wanted to speak my mind was that (the rumors) really were starting to affect my daily life. Now it feels like it's on my terms. I'm at peace with my family, my friends, myself and God so there's really nothing else that I worry about."

The actress, perhaps best known for her role as tormented teen Dawn Wiener in the film "Welcome To The Dollhouse," <a href="http://www.afterellen.com/archive/ellen/People/82004/heathermatarazzo.html" target="_hplink">came out in August 2004</a> by telling the <em>NY Daily News</em> about falling in love with Caroline Murphy: <blockquote>"I met the person I'm so madly crazy in love with...She's not famous yet. She will be. She wants to do musical theater and stage, which is not as demoralizing as the movie business is."</blockquote>

Melissa Etheridge, 1993

The rock star came out in January 1993 during the Triangle ball, the first ever ball thrown for the LGBT community during a president's inauguration, in this case Clinton's. <a href="http://www.afterellen.com/archive/ellen/column/2005/2/backintheday.html" target="_hplink">Etheridge recalls</a>: <blockquote>"I didn't even think, Oh, I'm going to come out here...It was, 'Gee, I'm really excited to be here, and I'm really proud to have been a lesbian all my life.' And a big cheer went up through the whole hall, and k.d. [lang] came out and hugged me. I remember walking back, and my friend said, 'I think you came out!'"</blockquote>

The former Savage Garden front man came out by marrying Richard Cullen in June 2006. He announced the civil union on his website <a href="http://chartrigger.blogspot.com/2006/07/darren-hayes-comes-out.html" target="_hplink">saying in part</a>: "As so many of you have given me your heart and soul over the past 10 years I thought it only fitting that I too return the respect and inform you of the most significant event in my life... On June 19th 2006 I married my boyfriend of two years, Richard, in a Civil Partnership ceremony in London."

The actress had been out to friends for quite some time, but she told the entire world in the fall of 2005 in interviews with <em>Details</em> magazine and <em>The Advocate</em>. "I've had my years of being not open, many years of it... It's an honor for me to do this; it's just nice to be asked," de Rossi said in her September 2005 <em>Advocate</em> <a href="http://crispie764.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=Urgent&action=display&thread=35" target="_hplink">cover story</a>, her first with the gay press.

Sean Hayes, 2010

Long dogged by rumors about his sexuality, the "Will and Grace" actor <a href="http://www.advocate.com/Arts_and_Entertainment/People/Sean_Hayes_I_Am_Who_I_Am/" target="_hplink">finally came out</a> in <em>The Advocate</em> in April 2010: "I am who I am. I was never in, as they say. Never," he said.

Cynthia Nixon, 2004

The "Sex And The City" star was out-ed in 2004 when the <em>NY Daily News</em> and the <em>New York Post</em> <a href="http://www.afterellen.com/People/92004/cynthianixon.html" target="_hplink">reported she was living</a> with another woman in September 2004. Nixon half-heartedly confirmed the rumors when she told the <em>Daily News</em>, "My private life is private... But at the same time, I have nothing to hide. So what I will say is that I am very happy."
