Americans Are Disillusioned with Candidate Obama; What About President Obama? (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | President Barack Obama has lost support from his progressive liberal base.

According to the Dec. 11, Gallup poll Obama's approval rating was at 43 percent. Obama's all-time-low approval rating is somewhere around 38 percent. President Obama's approval rating usually averages around 50 percent. Obama's approval rating has been as high as 69 percent. Recently there has been uproar in the Obama's progressive base with members expressing disillusionment with the president. George Clooney was quoted in an interview with ABC as being "disillusioned with people who are disillusioned with Obama."

Americans' disillusionment with Obama is baffling to the average political scientist who can point to numerous accomplishments by President Obama. There are more than nine pages of signed legislation on the White House website. The disillusionment with President Obama seems to come from the fact that he cannot be all things to all people. President Obama cannot control corporate hiring practices. Obama's administration spent billions of stimulus dollars to convince corporations to hire Americans once again. The hope was that increased corporate hiring would stimulate the economy. The 2010 election of a majority of Republicans in the House of Representatives ended President Obama's legislative accomplishments. That was the end of any hope for a comprehensive jobs bill and any more stimulus spending for jobs.

Americans disillusionment with Obama is because the people of America found out that Barack H. Obama was just an ordinary man. He inspired hope where there was no hope. Could Obama really change D.C. when he took office in 2009? The problem that Obama faced was that it was business as usual in D.C. He had promised to clean up D.C. if he was elected. Noam Chomsky attributes the disillusionment with Obama to the fact that he was an unknown. Chomsky says, "People know Obama now and that is his problem."

Obama's campaign staff had better find out why the public is so disillusioned with the president if he wants to win the 2012 election.

The president needs to address his entire base instead of pandering to the centrists. Progressives feel that Obama has caved in to Republican demands on more than one issue. Obama has not created jobs for African-Americans. Obama has not passed an immigration policy as promised to Hispanics during the 2008 campaign. Yet Obama's approval rating still remains high in those two core constituencies. African-Americans' support for President Obama has remained high at 89 percent. According to Politico, 61 percent of Hispanics plan on voting for Obama in the 2012 election.

President Obama's accomplishments include repealing "don't ask, don't tell" and passing the Hire Veterans Act. The accomplishment that Obama will go down in history for is the Affordable Healthcare Act. Americans should be asking themselves are they disillusioned with President Obama or Candidate Obama? President Obama has accomplished much more than Candidate Obama ever hoped to do. President Obama will forever be known as the most productive president in U.S. history unless he losses the 2012 election.
